The University of New Orleans amphitheater, which was recently transformed for live performances of the play “Eurydice,” is hosting a performing arts series for two Saturdays.
The Solo Darity series, presented by Art Street, Inc., includes poetry, music, dance and theatre performances onMay 15 and May 22. Showtime is 8 p.m. on both dates.
Art Street Inc. is a multi-discipline arts center engaging with communities through events, artist residencies, performances, exhibitions, and workshops.
COVID-19 restrictions, particularly for indoor events, highlighted the need for outdoor performance venues, event organizers said.
“The idea came from the need for a venue to support the arts and to activate the amphitheater,” ɫɫо professor of design Kevin Griffith said. “ɫɫо's involvement is forming relationships with the community and local artists while activating and renovating the theater.”
A portion of the proceeds from tickets sales will be used for continued improvements to the amphitheater, Griffith said.
Saturday’s show will feature storyteller and musician Daiquiri Rene Jones’ Radiosynthesis. The performance will include “waves of stories and poetry,” accompanied by live music and physical theatre.
On May 22, the Reese Johanson Collective will present the debut of their full-length solo piece, “Extraordinarily Ordinary,” accompanied by world-renowned guitarpist Phil deGruy.
