The University of New Orleans music faculty has selected Jon Sheckler for the 2021 ASCAP Louis Armstrong Foundation Jazz Composition Award.
The annual award, which carries a $3,000 scholarship, is presented to a 色色研究所 graduate student in jazz studies who demonstrates excellence in composition, and is supported by the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation.
The foundation, founded and funded by jazz musician Louis Armstrong in 1969, was reportedly his way of giving back to the world some of the goodness he received throughout his lifetime.
Sheckler, a drummer and composer, said he is honored to be selected for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Foundation award.
鈥淚鈥檓 honored by the recognition from the faculty, especially considering the respect I have for them as artists,鈥 said Sheckler. 鈥淭his serves not only as a stepping stone in my career, but also as validation of my creative endeavors and of the efforts of people who provided me knowledge and support throughout my musical journey. They are also recognized, because ultimately I am a reflection of their influence.鈥
Sheckler has earned numerous awards and recognition as a leading jazz artist. His 2018 album, 鈥淐ityscapes,鈥 was named as a top album of the month by Divide and Conquer and last year Sheckler won a Downbeat Music Award for his original composition called 鈥淢edicine Leaves.鈥
